Love Shines: From Smuggling Bibles to Training a Million Disciples

by D. Leland Paris
with Paul Snyder

Every Gen Z Christian in America should read this book and learn from the faith and ministry of Leland Paris. These stories paint a powerful picture of what it looks like to fully trust God in all things, in all circumstances, even when the situation seems too big or doesn’t make sense. Our culture today is overshadowed by lies, division, and hopelessness, but the life of faith that leaps off these pages is a powerful reminder that the love of Jesus will always shine through the darkness.

Abigail DeJarnatt, founder of Counteract USA

One of the great blessings of my life is the fact that Leland Paris is my uncle. I’ve known him literally all my life. And what I’ve seen up close is kindness, gentleness, humility, service, sacrifice, mercy, and perseverance, always accompanied by a twinkling sense of humor. He is present in some of my earliest missions memories, and all these years later his heart and his schedule seem to be as full as ever with our Lord’s great calling and commission to the nations. I believe you will be as drawn to the story as I am.

Twila Paris, Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee

In more than four decades of ministry, I’ve encountered very few leaders who so fully embody courage, character, and true servanthood as the author of this book. What’s remarkable is that the same assessment is echoed by leaders across the nations, even in places like the government of China, who recognize the spiritual authority he carries. These pages breathe faith, sacrifice, and authentic missionary zeal. As you read, don’t just absorb the words. Ask the Lord for an impartation of the grace and calling that rest on his life.

Lance Wallnau, bestselling author and strategic advisor

My heart was hit hard by the raw honesty and power in these pages. In an age of shifting truths, this book brought me back to the 'Fixed Point.' As I lead Build Up Korea, I realized once again that our mission for the next generation is not an option—it’s an emergency. This is the legacy we must fight to pass on. Thank you for showing us the way.

Mina Kim, founder of Build Up Korea

If I was asked by someone, “What is one of the most important things in all your life with the Lord?”, I could not find anything much better than this: He gave me friends who pass on to others with a common calling like us to do what He intended. Jesus gives us each from birth unique gifts for life. Though all of us are always different, each of those we see and be loved by others will also somehow remind us of Him. Leland and Loren, both friends of our family, have been for us a gracious invitation to share in a much-travelled friendship and ongoing affection. Leland was our welcome. Someone who saw us on our parallel journeys said what we did together would be of much value to many. Loren’s invitation to me was in his first “uttermost from Israel” YWAM visit with Joy Dawson in New Zealand; later then, Youth Aflame! became its first fundamental DTI. Such stories in many ways became ours too; and for this record, we owe it all to the One Who made this possible.

Winkie Pratney, Christian author and international speaker

Reading Leland’s story made me feel like I was strapped into a time machine and taken back across the last half a century of our life and the story of YWAM. When I finished it was like getting off a roller coaster, looking up and saying, “wow, we rode that?” It’s hard to believe that all of that happened and that we were part of so much history. Prayer marches, torch runs, wagon trains, Jesus Festivals don’t just happen, it takes people like Leland Paris to make them happen. I was so privileged to be with Leland and our other YWAM brothers and sisters at so many of the events that are shared here. All of them were impossible but were made possible by obedience to the voice of God. Thank you, Leland, for the wonderful reminders of all the miracles, the provisions, the doors that God opened. Thank you for your obedience and thank you for your friendship. Wow, what a ride!

Alex Akimoff, YWAM Slavic Ministries

It was in 1964 when Leland, along with his wife Frances, assumed the pastorate of my home church in Hammonton, NJ, a town largely comprised of first and second-generation Italian immigrants. I was 18 years old at the time, and it wasn’t long before Leland began to involve me in his ventures within our Church and in our community. After I met my future wife and we decided to marry, Leland officiated our wedding ceremony in 1967. There is so much I could say about the impact Leland has had on my wife and me throughout the many years of our relationship, but such accounts would fill volumes. His personal life, the continual self-giving for the benefit of others, and the personal sacrifices I have witnessed, all speak tremendously of his faithfulness to our Lord and his love for God’s people. Gifted with an extraordinary memory, Leland can recount detailed and distant facts, along with the ability to impart profound insights and truths. His new book, Love Shines, encapsulates the experiences that showcase the gifts God has bestowed upon Leland. Yet this book is only a brief glimpse into Leland’s life. It pales in comparison to the man of God he is in person. I heartily endorse this book, but you would gain even more if you were to know Leland like I have, who for over sixty years has been my mentor and as close as family.

Dave DeFebbo Sr., YWAM Tyler

In the past 60 years, Leland Paris and the late Loren Cunningham introduced to the global ecclesia and the Christian Reformed tradition a new creative, revolutionary approach to discipleship and missions under a creative paradigm. These two cousins were like Paul and Barnabas, who left the Jerusalem church for Antioch, in initiating the venturesome and creative movement—Youth With A Mission (YWAM). For over half a century Leland Paris and Loren Cunningham have provided creative direction and motivation to Christian leaders. The nature of this movement is to apply the strategies of disciples and apostles in the early churches. This movement has sparked spiritual awakening among Protestants and Catholics alike. Leland Paris, who pastored a church in New Jersey, felt that his arena of ministry was not restricted to a local church. He received a stronger calling to serve with a vision to reach out with the gospel by discipleship training of Christians, and he devoted his life to it. Almost 50 years ago, Dr. Paris established a YWAM base in Lindale, Texas, and served faithfully as a pioneer, founder, and trailblazer of today’s ministry at Twin Oaks campus. He is still not retired from his calling and my 25 years of partnership with him in the northeast Asian countries is still active. We need to recognize his legacy as a spiritual role model that will continue to be a model for the next generation of Christian leadership. Dr. Paris has accomplished extraordinary results in northeast Asia ministries, not only providing leadership and vision training for his staff, but he also implanted his zeal and spirit to the local indigenous trilingual Christian leadership in the region. He is always excited about the lost being saved and consequently getting them better trained to be “doers of the Word, not hearers only.”

Col. Daniel Moon, Ph.D., U.S. Army Chaplain (Ret.); former director, Korean Ministries, Southern Baptist Convention

Leland’s heartfelt style and vivid descriptions over more than half a century in missions make this book a gripping account of both courage and humility. It’s been an incredible privilege to serve alongside Leland, Fran, and their family from the mid-seventies till the present day. Our firsthand memories of these extraordinary circumstances (including “If My People” in ‘74, the “Spirit in ‘76,” the Solvang Castle, “Reach Out Caribbean Coastlands” and so much more) still stir earnest praises to the Lord Jesus. This book comes with our highest recommendations!

Herb and Sue Haines, YWAM Tyler

This book is an epic testimony of a true follower of Jesus who, ignited by His Great Commission, has lived a fiery life of sharing Jesus and the Gospel with the whole world. Dr. Paris speaks to every Christian, living in an age where it is easy to become intoxicated by the abundance of the world, to wake up and stand for Christ. This book will prove to be a blessing to all the readers by making them recognize the urgency and importance of spreading the gospel and igniting their passion for Christ anew in this spiritually desolate time.

Rev. Dr. Moonjang Lee, senior pastor, Saeum Church, South Korea

I’ve had the special privilege of knowing Dr. Leland Paris since 2009. He is a father-like figure to many YWAMers, including myself. He has shown his special appreciation and compassion to people from East Asia. He has served many countries quietly and humbly, pouring out his compassion to those suffering in restricted countries with great passion. While serving as Vice President of Mongolia International University, I spent a year at YWAM Tyler, which Dr. Leland pioneered. Conversations with him helped me envision what it would be like to live with God throughout a lifetime. He served as a model for me, demonstrating how to pursue God-given goals despite various challenges. He was always resourceful like a scholar and cheerful like a child, and his stories fascinated me. After establishing Jakarta International University in Indonesia, I spent another sabbatical year at YWAM Tyler to deepen my relationship with him and his staff. I have long wished for his special stories to be shared with the world. As one of his friends who eagerly awaited his thoughts and insights in written form, I am greatly excited to see his amazing stories of a specially devoted life published. I am confident that his stories will deeply touch and move many readers.

Dr. Yonggyu Lee, founder of Jakarta International University, author of Surrender

Within the first paragraphs of Love Shines, I realized I had just discovered and opened the lid of a treasure chest packed with spiritual history and wealth of individual sacrifice, beyond my expectations. Dr. Paris shines a bright light into how God raises up and uses ordinary men and women who are willing to lay down their lives and personal interests to pursue God’s interests and His Divine plans throughout the world. Each story is genuine and significant as to how God shines His truth and light into some of the darkest places through selfless servants who are courageous enough to “dare to venture.” In his usual fashion, Leland Paris humbly diverts attention from his own great accomplishments and focuses on how God has used others. Having known Leland for over forty years, as a friend and colleague, I know first-hand how God has used him to influence cultures and nations, even in some of the most sensitive and restricted places in the world. My life is enriched from knowing Leland and from reading Love Shines. Open the treasure chest and discover the wealth. I highly recommend it.

Dr. Don Crum, president and founder of Leadership International

Over a decade ago, I met Dr. Leland Paris as we were working together on an international project. Immediately, I knew that God had placed His hand on this man and was using him to advance the Kingdom of God all around the world. I wanted to learn from this man’s life and his example of faithfulness. The book you are holding in your hand is a testimony of what God can do through someone completely devoted to Him. I encourage you to read this book, pray after each chapter, and ask the Lord to teach you how to be a better follower of Christ. God is writing your story just as He is writing Dr Paris’ and He can use you for the glory of His name.

Dr. Brent Taylor, senior pastor, First Baptist Church at The Fields, Carrolton, Texas

For over two decades, I have traveled and had the privilege of ministering with Dr. Paris in areas around the world where most people would not dare tread. During this time, he has become a great friend and mentor, never “telling” but suggesting ways to walk life’s journey in the Kingdom of God that allows others to “see the Christ in you.” From the very beginning, the reader of Love Shines is immersed into a rich history of legacy, intrigue, and inspiring tales of Dr. Paris’ life. His personal journey encapsulates the true meaning of laying down one’s life for the Gospel of the Kingdom and fulfilling one’s calling to disciple the nations.

William (Bill) Thomas, Global Bridges Advisory Board

I have known and respected Dr. Leland Paris for many years. What he has been doing for decades in feeding and caring for thousands of children and trafficked girls in highly restrictive nations is profoundly inspiring and God-honoring. We all need to be challenged and convicted by these God-stories in Love Shines. I wholeheartedly applaud and support Dr. Paris in his integrity and unwavering faithfulness in serving the least of these.

Dr. John C. Kim, Founder of JAMA Global

This book, written by Dr. Leland Paris is a 21st century real life action drama written by a true saint. Leland answers the question of “Who is my neighbor?” clearly and unequivocally by demonstrating his love for all of the underprivileged throughout the world regardless of their circumstances. He is the model of a modern-day Good Samaritan who truly loves his neighbor as himself and loves God with his whole heart, mind and soul!

Tom Leiser

I had the privilege to serve under Leland’s leadership in YWAM Central America for many years. Love Shines will take you on the journey of a man with a rich spiritual inheritance from a family dedicated to their missionary call. This book will share the story of a man who said “yes” to the call of the Lord in his life at a young age and was obedient to God’s voice. You will be encouraged in your faith and be challenged by his life. You will experience how a man’s journey with the Lord throughout many years has touched hearts and transformed countless lives. Leland has been a part of discipling nations and has seen Gods mercies and many miracles. This is an incredible story of how God can use an ordinary family, through many generations, totally committed to him. It will inspire you to hear Gods voice, obey, and embark on your own journey to be a part of the Great Commission. It is a wonderful account of Gods faithfulness throughout generations.

Edgar Chavez, elder and leader, YWAM, Central America

Love Shines captures the essence of Leland Paris’s mission-driven life, detailing his foundational role in Youth With A Mission and the development of its Discipleship Training School (DTS), which has shaped over a million souls in 190 countries. Leland’s remarkable journey, divinely guided to lead pivotal global missions, is a testament to faith where, against all odds and with miraculous provision, he succeeded time and again. In 1998, Leland and his wife Frances established Global Bridges (GlobalBridgesRelief.org), aiming to bring the Gospel’s light to the most restricted nations. His accounts of divine intervention and favor with national leaders, once adversaries, now open to the Gospel, are nothing short of miraculous. This is more than a book; it’s a clarion call to believers to live out the Great Commission with zeal. Leland Paris, a man of humility and kindness, stands as a spiritual giant whose example of living and preaching the Gospel is to be followed. I can’t recommend this exciting and inspiring book too strongly.

Pastor Frank Masserano, MDiv, ThM, founder and general overseer (ret.), International Ministerial Fellowship

Love Shines details the amazing life of Leland Paris. Although not as well-known as his cousin Loren Cunningham (Founder of YWAM, Youth With A Mission), Leland’s life is nevertheless just as incredible and miraculous. One has to wonder how one man could impact, challenge, train, and transform so many ordinary people into extraordinary zealots for God’s kingdom purposes. My wife Nancy and I first met Loren Cunningham while working with David Wilkerson at the Teen Challenge Center in Brooklyn, NY. Loren was a guest speaker at an Assembly of God church in Manhattan. That evening, he emphasized the 'islands,' aligning perfectly with our vision to minister in the Pacific Islands. We introduced Loren to our friends Geoff and Gail Stevens, who had access to land on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. Gail invited Loren to speak at their Christmas gathering, believing that adventurous New Zealanders would be ideal for missionary work. Loren accepted. After returning to New Zealand, Nancy, our three-month-old daughter Lisa, and I traveled there by freighter. We moved into a small, electricity- and plumbing-free house on Great Barrier Island, a stark contrast to our American home. At the conference, held near the water’s edge, Loren met Joy Dawson for the first time. Joy played a crucial role in teaching Loren to hear and recognize the voice of the Lord. This book will take you on a dizzying journey of God’s provision, protection, and providence from New Jersey to New Guinea and beyond. The great takeaway from reading this book is that just as Jesus took a handful of smelly fishermen to turn the world upside down, He can use you also. It’s not your ability that God is after but your availability. Read, enjoy, enlist!

David Ravenhill, author and itinerant teacher

As I was reading Dr. Paris’s Love Shines, it reminded me of the last verse of the Old Testament: “He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.” Inheriting the passion for the gospel that has been passed down from his family, his amazing missionary work of traveling to more than 140 countries around the world for over 50 years, establishing missionary bases, and helping to send out 30,000 missionaries is truly a fulfillment of Jesus’ command to “be my witnesses to the ends of the earth.” This is a great model for learning how to share the gospel in persecuted countries where not even a single Bible is allowed. Korea has experienced miraculous development since the gospel was spread by more than 3,000 missionaries from Christian countries, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia 140 years ago, along with the beginning of modern education and Western medicine introduced by missionaries. Many Koreans have a grateful heart for those foreign missionaries. At present, God has once again dispatched almost 23,000 missionaries from Korea to about 170 countries, and they are working hard to serve as witnesses for Jesus to the ends of the earth, second only to the United States. This is the will of the foreign missionaries who came to Korea over 100 years ago and has been passed on as a legacy to the next generation of Korean missionaries. In a larger sense, I think this is also a fulfillment of the last verse of Malachi. I am carrying out a movement to preserve the remains of mission stations left behind by foreign missionaries who came to Korea and to serve as a foundation for the next generation to recover their faith through pilgrimage activities. For this purpose, the project of inscribing the remains of Christian mission stations in Korea as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is in progress. I hope that someday these projects will be carried out at YWAM bases as well. I pray that “The Telling” work will continue to the next generation through Love Shines, which contains Dr. Paris’s missionary work that has inherited the passion for evangelism of his ancestors and has borne wonderful fruits along with his co-workers.

Dr. Mark Mancheol Suh, president, Korean Society of Mission Heritage; former president, Kongju National University, Korea

This is the book I want every YWAMer to read! It is jam-packed with stories and behind-the-scenes historical background that brings into clear focus the values and principles upon which our Mission is founded. Thank you, Leland, for writing this book. I read it from cover to cover in just two sittings.

Peter Warren, YWAM international leader

Leland Paris has dedicated his life to reaching the unreached people groups around the world. His fervent wish is to light a beacon for the younger generations. This book will indeed stir our hearts to share the good news of Christ to a lost world that desperately needs it.

David Hickey, pastor of Community Christian Fellowship, Lindale, Texas

I have known Leland Paris since college days. His whole life has been in ministry. I have always admired his complete commitment to the great commission and meeting the needs of people all over the world. particularly those in isolation. He has not only gone himself but trained and channeled thousands of others into their own destiny in serving. This story is a story of networking with other people and groups across the body of Christ. The innovation of vision and strategic projects of implantation are impressive. They have been vehicles and inspiration for so many. Reading these adventures reminds me of God’s goodness, his greatness and his compassion for the human condition. Thank you Leland for expressing the heart of God in reaching and discipling.

Dean Sherman, author, YWAM leader, international speaker

Love Shines is not just an autobiography, but a book of encouragement, history, testimonies, and more, that allows us to see how God has used Leland Paris to spread His love all over the world. This incredible book demonstrates how Leland listened to the Lord, remained thankful in all the trials, and saw God’s hand through so many people whom the Lord brought in his path in YWAM and beyond. In this book, Leland says we are all called to bring some measure of light into the world. The book demonstrates how Leland is a catalyst for so many of us to do exactly that and it inspires us to shine that light into the future. This book is a treasure!

Sid Weigand, entrepreneur

Leland Paris is one of the greatest leaders I’ve ever known. He’s as warm as a teddy bear and wise as a sage. Most importantly, he became a spiritual father to thousands of young people like me who followed his example to fulfill the Great Commission. God used Leland to encourage spiritual awakening in America (If My People, The Spirit in ‘76 and Washington for Jesus) while ministering in and mobilizing missionaries into 160 nations. That’s a life well-lived. You’ll love the God-stories in this book. One insight is the blessing that comes multi-generationally to a family that is sold out for Jesus. That started with his Nicholson grandparents, co-laboring with his cousin, Loren Cunningham, in the growth of Youth With A Mission, and in worship & song through his niece, Twila Paris. Leland taught me servant leadership, to be “sure I had a scripture for everything I said and did,” and to live a life of “giving and forgiving.” I am eternally grateful for his godly influence.

Ron Boehme, leader of YWAM Northwest District, director of US Renewal

Walking alongside Leland through his life’s journey, I have been profoundly moved by the milestones marking God’s preparation for him to become a missionary statesman. His calling has led him through the halls of power and into the humble pathways of remote villages, navigating through doors God opened into nations both receptive and resistant to the Gospel. Witnessing Leland’s intellectual and heartfelt development into a person embodying continuous “giving and forgiving,” even in the face of daunting faith challenges and disappointments, has been nothing short of inspiring. Leland’s insatiable hunger to learn from the giants of faith who have walked before us demonstrates a readiness to venture into the unknown. This diligence has prepared him for an incredible journey of faith and service. My own understanding of the depth and breadth of what preceded our shared experiences was significantly deepened when I found myself in a hotel room in a highly restricted nation with Leland and a few others, being briefed by an officer from the American embassy. Having learned that I was an Australian he turned to me and asked, “Does your embassy know that you are planning to venture into this dangerous situation with this lot?” I responded sheepishly with a hesitant “No.” My response highlighted my reliance on the intuitive confidence I placed in Leland’s security in God—a confidence forged through years of navigating faith challenges and his assurance that we would never be alone. I invite you to join me in exploring the adventure of Leland’s walk through 140 nations. This book not only informs but also inspires, offering a unique perspective on what it means to live a life fully surrendered to God’s will, ready to face the unknown with faith and courage.

Tom Hallas, YWAM elder

Both Leland and Fran Paris come from rich spiritual heritages stemming back from the 1914 spirited movement of God through their grandparents, and for over 5O years to this present day serving with YWAM, a dynamic international missionary movement that has impacted more than a million people through its training and ministry. Leland is one of those hero’s of the faith; a great statesman of our time, who saw what God wanted to do before it existed, and then obeyed God, taking steps and launching out when there was no evidence that each mission was even possible. He gave (devoted) his life to the vision of training and discipling thousands of young people, while showing mercy and grace to the “one’s”desperate and in need of help. This man of God traversed into restricted and dangerous places all over the world for the sake of bringing the gospel message and example of God’s Truth, Love and Freedom, and at great risk to his life. He has “dared to venture” with God his entire life. Truly a champion of world missions, while caring for those in need. It has been an honor to work (labor together) with he and his wife, Fran, for 50 plus years in the this YWAM journey. In this book you’ll read of a wealth of family lineage that traced back from the Hebrides Island, which birthed and framed the heritage that brought forth a family of Fire Brands, leading to a global missionary movement; “A global ‘spiritual’ fire bringing the Gospel torch to every nation.” The stories are riveting and serve as sparks flying off the pages to ignite anew the readers’ tender “embers into flames.” You too will find your faith inspired to Dare to Venture on God’s exciting path. In this Book Leland describes the vastness of God and the ability and desire to work with us in intimate relationship, and His loving plan to free us to do just that. A plan flawlessly executed.

Bonnie Moore, YWAM Tyler

The ripple effect of stepping into a legacy and the stewardship of one’s inheritance shapes individuals and nations. Leland unpacks his journey from a local pastor to a global missionary and the power of truth and the Bible as a point of reference in embracing Gods dreams among the nations. These stories are an invitation to take your place in God’s story as your obey Him with your unique God given gifts and calling.

Giacomo Coghi, co-founder of YWAM San Jose, Costa Rica

Leland Paris is a faithful servant of the Lord. More than a missionary, Leland is a missionary Statesman. Between the lines of this book lies a wealth of principled truths that are well-told and well-lived out in Leland’s life. My life and ministry is one expression of a multitude of missionaries and missions on the field today impacted by Leland.

Beverly Kline, founder of Living Alternatives, Tyler, Texas

For over 42 years, I have had the honor of serving at the YWAM, Tyler campus, where Dr. Paris has been the steadfast ministry founder and leader throughout these decades. Witnessing his heart, the sincerity of his vision, and his tireless efforts to communicate and demonstrate the love and passion of Jesus for our world has been a privilege beyond measure. Dr. Paris’s book masterfully captures historical events and the enduring principles of God’s kingdom, presenting them in a way that is sure to inspire and equip future generations. I am deeply grateful for his dedication to sharing these insights, helping us all to understand and appreciate the myriad ways God works in our world. Thank you, Dr. Paris, for your commitment to this vital work. Your book is a beacon of hope and a source of profound inspiration.

Stan Richardson, executive director of YWAM Alamogordo, New Mexico

We’ve enjoyed knowing, watching, and learning from the unique and wonderful lives of Leland and Fran Paris. They are an awesome couple who have learned to par with the adversities of mission life. They’ve created the ministry adage, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken.” This is not a mere whimsical thought, especially when united with God-anointed vision and serious intercessory prayer for new ministries—the kind that reach out bravely into all nations. I’m sure you will also enjoy reading their missions journey and find the encouragement to step out with God and begin your own unique adventure stories.

Don and Barb Johnson, co-founders and co-directors, YWAM Nicaragua

When I first met Leland, he was excited with the prospect of attending a YWAM School of Evangelism (SOE) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Later, I went to visit him in Hammonton, NJ and he shared his experiences from the SOE and was instrumental in recruiting my wife, Rozanne, and I, into the mission. Leland was my first leader and as such my mentor. I have always appreciated his gentle and wise counsel. It was exciting to read Love Shines. It helped me reminisce on so many things that God has done through Leland’s life and ministry, some of which I had the privilege of being a small part of. Reading his book helped me remember just how much God has done over the years through Leland’s leadership and influence in our mission. I encourage everyone to read this exciting book filled with wonderful stories, great vision, and powerful teaching. Prepare to have your life challenged and changed!

Nick Savoca, co-founder, Prayer Stations

In Love Shines, Dr. Paris offers readers a profound insight into a journey of faith and determination that spans over 35 years—a journey I have been privileged to observe closely yet found myself discovering anew through the pages of his book. What a blessing it was to uncover aspects of Dr. Paris and his family’s story that were previously unknown to me. Each paragraph, rich with experience and wisdom, held my attention so firmly that I found it difficult to put the book down. The title itself, Love Shines, perfectly encapsulates the essence of Dr. Paris’s countenance, approach to life, and ministry. His entire career has been a testament to the courage of stepping into the unknown, of daring to go where many would hesitate. This spirit of boldness and faith is woven throughout the narrative, making the book not just a recounting of events, but a beacon of inspiration for those who seek to live a life aligned with God’s will. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone on the path of pursuing God’s will for their life. Dr. Paris’s story, as told through this compelling book, is not just a keeper for the tough times but a guidepost for the journey. It is with great admiration and without any reservation that I endorse this remarkable testament to a life of faith and daring.

Dr. James Dill, founder and president of Shepherd’s Heart Ministry

Having had the privilege to witness Leland and Fran Paris embodying their Love Shines ethos for more than 50 years, I can attest to the profound journey they have undertaken. This book, which you now have the opportunity to explore, serves as a powerful testament to their lives of faith, courage, and relentless pursuit of God’s calling. It is designed to inspire, encourage, and affirm the dreams, ambitions, and passions that God places within each of us.

Gary W. Stephens, co-author of Waiting for a Father

I have known Leland Paris for over 20 years mainly because of my association with Youth With a Mission, Tyler. When he returned from one of his numerous missionary and humanitarian trips deep into countries with repressive authoritarian regimes, I was amazed of how he had success bringing hope and healing to thousands of people suffering religious persecution and poverty. He is a hero to them and to many of us back home following his travels.

Dr. David F. Nichols, DDS, FICD

My initial encounter with Dr. Paris in 2008 at YWAM Tyler made an indelible impression on me. That impression resonates after knowing and working closely with him all these years later. Leland Paris is a visionary, a trailblazer, and a spiritual giant, yet he meets each encounter with a warmth and gentleness that speaks of his true character as a man of God, deeply caring for every individual. This book, a vivid testimony to the faithful servant’s journey, captures eighty years of his life and ministry. It may seem long overdue, but Leland in his characteristic humility, has always said that the timing for its release had not yet come. More than just the story of Leland Paris, this book unveils “His story”—the narrative of the living God working mightily through him.

SeungJong Lee, Korean ministries director, YWAM Tyler

Neither Esther, Joshua, nor Noah had any idea that their remarkable life stories would end up in a book. They simply strived to live a righteous life which then ended up being an inspiration to believers for thousands of years. As followers of Christ, shouldn’t we conduct our lives as if it were a Bible story? It’s exactly what comes to mind as I read about the many twists and turns in Leland Paris’ life. In Love Shines, you will read the amazing things that happen when you make fulfilling the great commission your singular goal in life. Let this book inspire you to continue your own venture in spreading the gospel everywhere.

Frank de Jong, producer and business manager

I’ve known Leland since 1979 and I’ve witnessed first-hand many of the miracles, victory stories, divine breakthroughs, and nation impacting events which the Lord accomplished through his surrendered life, detailed in these pages. The Lord has used Leland to not only accomplish much for His Kingdom, but also to inspire, recruit, train, and send thousands of young missionaries of all ages to surrender to God’s will for their lives in missions and be used in like manner. I pray this book finds its way into the hands of thousands more who will be inspired to trust God to use them to bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth so that the 3.29 billion unreached Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists can receive the Gospel, and so that the Bible can be translated into the remaining 3,500 language groups with little or no access to Scripture. May God be glorified!

Fred Markert, missions team, Church of The Highlands & Highlands College

I have had the privilege of working with Leland since 1975. I have witnessed many of the stories you will read in this book and enjoyed being a part of some of them. After we had worked together for several years, we discovered that my wife’s grandmother had been led to the Lord by Leland’s mother in the 1930s when his parents were pioneering a church in Flagstaff, Arizona. This has made us feel even more like family as we realized we have had generational blessings for decades due to the obedience of the Paris family. Many of the adventures you will read about happened in restricted nations where preaching the Gospel is prohibited. However, Leland’s perseverance and ability to demonstrate God’s love gave him favor and relationships that opened doors to save lives from famine and for hearts to receive a touch from the Lord. The verse that I often think of when observing Leland’s life is Matthew 5:16. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Mark Brock, former CFO, YWAM Tyler

In every generation since the ascension of our Lord, there have been men and women who accomplished great things for Christ, seeing opportunities others missed. They ventured with great faith, confident in their divine purpose. Leland Paris is such a man. In Love Shines, brother Leland, with the credentials of a seasoned missionary statesman, opens a treasure chest of stories and insights. This book will inspire you to reach higher, go further, and dig deeper into God’s purpose for your life. Feel free to dream and imagine what your life could look like if you were to completely surrender to God’s purpose for your life.

Dr. Phil Brassfield, founder of Destiny Ministries

This book is a road trip of reminiscences and mile marker memories: but Leland’s memory doesn’t just work backwards, it shines a light for us on the road ahead. He knows the carefree highways and the beckoning byways…the ways through and the ways to…the roads that will take us and the roads that will make us—and warns us of the roads that could break us. Leland gives us the keys, gifts us the history, wraps the present, foresees the future; embraces the horizon and an inheritance hoped for in which “God may well grant us success wherever we go and in all we put our hand to” (Joshua 14:12, 1: 6-9).

Leland Paris is a man of Faith: I have known him for fifty years and he has been a mentor, teacher and friend. Leland’s life story is not some boring memoir but a challenge to people of all ages, especially the young to take a stand for the incarnate Word of God, Jesus Christ Himself, and follow Him wherever He leads. I met Leland at the YWAM Staff conference in 1973 in Desert Hot Springs when all of us could fit in one room. We went on to attend the School of Evangelism in New Jersey, where Leland was the director at the time, the only YWAM school in the USA. His trust and faith in us hippies, newly saved in Kabul, Afghanistan, was the beginning of our career as pioneer missionaries in Santa Cruz and Solvang, California and then in Tyler, Texas where we served as a part of the YWAM Community Leadership Team until we launched Teachers for Africa and Community Hope School in Windhoek, Namibia. I am humbled to be asked to write an endorsement for this testament and chronicle of a life lived to the fullest for God’s Glory.

This work is a profound spiritual journey, chronicling Leland and Fran’s miraculous experiences as they surrendered to God. My wife and I joined them in 1983 and witnessed the powerful impartation of their anointing, which spread to thousands worldwide. Winning a soul is wise; winning a soul winner is more expedient. However, discipling a disciple to make disciples is true multiplication, reflecting God’s heart for the nations. This is the legacy of the authors. These pages offer encouragement and impartation. As Leland shares his testimonies, they inspire joy and respect for God’s work in surrendered lives. This book is a must-read, intertwining foundational truths that evoke worship and understanding. As the Gospel of James says, faith without works is dead. This book demonstrates the power of committed faith. Goethe’s words resonate here: “Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” Thank you, Leland, for penning this journey. Those of us privileged to travel the globe with you are transformed all over again by these highlights of our shared journey.

This is a story of seed sown and a lifetime of traversing the globe. Some have fallen on the wayside, some on rocky soil, some among thorns, but some fell on good ground bearing fruit—30, 60, and even 100-fold! What makes a man do what he does? What eternal thing lasts after the man has gone? What remains after the fire has passed over? Through Leland’s life, a door has been opened. We peer through that opening to see that which is lasting, that which is true. The eternal light of Christ shines through! I still remember a Wednesday night in the early 90s at a local community church. Leland took time from a busy international schedule to attend, not as a speaker. The pastor preached; we had prayer time. I was at a low point, having walked away from a career, fresh out of college, to join a missionary group. After 12 years of hard sacrifice and work, revival had not come. There I stood holding an empty sack, a wife, 4 kids, and with a business that was barely making it. Was it worth it? I felt a hand on my shoulder and heard a prayer. Looking up, it was Leland. God has His people, and they’ll get the job done! Thanks, Leland, for your book, but your life speaks more loudly than any words you’ve spoken or written. For those who haven’t known Leland, this book will give you a glimpse of a man who has lived truth and been effective. The hope and truth shared in this book are eternal, everlasting, and will not pass away.

Love Shines captures the essence of who Leland Paris is. Having a rich spiritual heritage running through his whole family, coupled with a sincere love for the Truth, makes Leland a tremendous source of enlightenment and understanding. He articulates the growth and development of the philosophical decline of our time and the rise of the religion of secular progressivism in our world today. This contrasted with his life of dedication to the personal and spiritual well-being of his fellow man, and coupled with a wealth of personal experience, enables us to see the goodness and mercy of God lived out in the flesh. Thank you, Leland, for your faithfulness and dedication to The Truth.

What a great read. God revealed himself faithful to a man who was obedient to him. We need more believers who are willing dream big for God and who step out in faith to see the message of hope spread around the world. The face of missions has been forever impacted because of men like Leland Paris.

In Dare to Adventure, Dr. Leland Paris presents an inspiring combination of history he has studied, and history he has helped shape. Numerous real-life examples illustrate the adventure in world missions that lies ahead for those who dare to step out in obedience to Jesus’ last instructions.

Leland portrays the life of a true servant of God who demonstrates that The Great Commission is not burdensome, but indeed a great adventure. A pioneer in YWAM (Youth With A Mission), Leland conceived the vision for DTS (Discipleship Training School)—a model that has shaped the lives of over one million students. Romans 8:5 tells us that "those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit." This mindset led Leland to believe that no nation is closed to the Gospel, though some may be more difficult to reach. Driven by the Spirit, he penetrated the most restrictive nations with the Bible, introducing them to the Light of the World—Jesus. His work stands as evidence that Jesus can change the trajectory of an entire nation. Leland's life is a blueprint of how God can work in and through those who are called. His example of smuggling Bibles into the Soviet Union and building bridges with communist leaders in restrictive areas serves as proof that God continues to honor faithful passion and effort—now spanning over 200 ministries in more than 140 nations. His belief that darkness has no power of its own, but is simply the absence of light, drove him to bring Jesus to the most closed corners of the world. In 1998, he founded Global Bridges, which continues to carry the light and training into restricted regions where fundamental freedom is denied and hope is hard to find. The blueprint of Leland's life should challenge each of us to seek the blessings of a Spirit-led life that allows God's love to shine in our world. His story is a testament: "To God be the glory—great things He hath done," and will continue to do.
